ESSAY ON THE LIVE MUSIC WORLD
When looking at the lineups of TomorrowWorld, Electric Daisy Concert, and other major music festivals, one thing is significantly noticeable: majority of the acts are male. Does this mean that men like electronic music more than women do? If you look into the audience, it seems to be split half male/female. So the answer to this question is most likely no, there is no one gender that has more interest in the music. So why is it that majority of performers are male? Is the EDM industry biased? I explore this question in my film, Stereotypes in EDM. I would like to gather more information about how the lineups for these shows are chosen. For example, I would like to know whether the acts are specifically chosen by a team, or if the festival directors hold auditions. This vital piece of information can help undercover the bias in the EDM industry.
essay on the online music world
Electronic music, or Techno music, is born on a computer. Naturally, that is also where it is raised. There are numerous websites that are dedicated to the production, the display, and the sharing of these songs. Among hundreds of these websites is one of the most popular, Sound Cloud. Sound Cloud allows users to make their own profiles where they can upload their own pieces, share others’, or simply listen to their favorite artists new sets. Upon typing into Google “top SoundCloud profiles” I was greeted with a list of- surprise- mainly males. Why is this the case? Is it that there are less women making music, or do people genuinely just enjoy music produced by males more? I would like to explore these questions in my video. I will ask all of my interviewees about their experience on this website, and whether or not they think it is biased toward one gender. If they agree that it is in fact biased toward one gender, I will ask them why. Because they will all have more experience than me in the area, I expect that their responses can accurately represent the answers of many of their community.
